In the Schusev State Museum
of Architecture in Moscow there is a permanent exhibition, which presents the
Grand Kremlin model of am architect Vasily Bazhenov. This model changes the
idea of model-making itself. It seems impossible to create something so large
and detailed.
Sadly this building has not
been built in reality as Catherine II stopped the construction only two years
after it was started. This model is still a great example of Empress’s
ambition. She wanted to show the wealth and power of Russian monarchy.
The model itself is
absolutely stunning even though it was moved many times and stored in boxes for
many years. It is important to know that in the museum only a part of a model
is presented because other parts still need restoration and it has been estimated
that around 20% of the original model has been lost. Also the original model is
17 meters long and the largest room is only 15 meters. But even without these
parts the model is very impressive.
The wooden model is the
revised version of the first model (shows the changes that has been made by
Catherine).
I think that we all should learn from architects of the past, from
their hard work and dedication. That is the reason why the model even today
attracts so may people and is the main exhibition in the museum. It is a great
treasure that people should not forget about and should value because it is a
part of our history.

Have seen this model before, absolutely amazing work almost crazy due to the great effort which is used to create this small architectural monument. Was so shocked by the detailed work of Vasily Bazhenov. Will agree that the idea of model making changed dramatically... the massiveness kills understanding of how this can be even made.

it is an amazing way of visualizing and submission of the project. I also saw this exhibit and was impressed by the quality of the model. Every detail is renewed by the best restorers of Russia . I can not say that I'm excited about the project, I do not like so many colonnades and color scheme , but thanks to this model, we can imagine how important position in the royal court the architect had.
