Gorky's House

Moscow's architecture includes many different styles and contains a lot of unusual buildings, which creates various atmosphere in surrounding. Art Nouveau is one of the extraordinary style played an important part from 1895 to 1910 years. The most enjoyable Art Nouveau creation is Ryabushinsky House, which is famous now as the Gorky House Museum. It brings a great attention by the extraordinary interior and exterior. This house was given to Maksim Gorky by Stalin like a place for meeting of artists and writers. However, Maksim Gorky's career of writer went into decline and he spend his last 5 years of life in this house. The architecture of the residence were designed by Fyodor Shekhtel based on Art Nouveau structure, which makes it quite interesting. Nowadays, everybody can visit Gorky House, because it works like a museum.

The exterior of the building has large windows with curving wooden frames and amazing natural colored tiles all around the facade of the house, which create natural effect of Art Nouveau style. Usually, the main materials of this style are cement, wood, iron and stone- all natural. Big windows gives beautiful view on the garden creating a connection wit nature.  In a modern world architecture are far away from use of shapes of Art Nouveau style, actually it is still relevant and enjoyable to see.

Awesome part of the Gorky House Museum is staircase in a middle of the first floor. This is a central attraction of the house. The staircase are made of artificial marble and it is very glossy. It is very nice to touch the smooth surface of the staircase, which is not allowed during a visit of the museum. One of the gorgeous decoration of the staircase is jellyfish lamp with a little sit in the beginning of the staircase. The staircase is a very strong and has good quality, been preserved for a long period of time. Another rooms of the maison are quite differ and each have own style with unique design of parquet with pattern. Ceilings are consists of different  flower ornaments on it with colors relevant to nature.

It would be better for everyone to visit Gorky House Museum and to see the beauty and extraordinary style of it. I am sure, you will be impressed.

  1. Thank you for the useful information, Daria! I have never heard about this historical place before. Can't wait to visit this house in order to observe all this ctructures, detailes and decoration you write about. What is more, watching the photos I can agree with you that the combination of natural materials used for this interior looks amazinig. It is always interesting for our profession to examine how different types of building materials could interact with each other in different places with different light.

  3. Join to Evgenia's comment. I have haerd a lot about this place, but had forgotten at all about its existence untill today. Now the goal is set. I am going to go there and admire the centrepiece of the house: a limestone staircase which seems to melt into the floor.

  4. I have never heard of it before, but I wouldn't even try to hide the fact that I'm impressed. The photos chosen by you communicate to the audience a building that is not only beautiful, but it seems as though it is alive, nevermind the awesomeness of the fact that we have our own Casa MilĂ  in Moscow!) Thank you for educating us on this amazing structure.
