Utrecht University Library

This amazing building appear as a result of won competition of Library to University in Utrecht,
The Netherlands. It was built in 2004 by the project of Wiel Arets Architects. All their projects are distinguished by unique atmosphere inside, they are always full of light and air.

Firstly, The Library looks very special by it's facade. It is a simple shaped building, covered in concrete pannels, smooth ones and ones with carved in relief of Indian cane (bamboo) and glass panels with the same pattern printed on it.

Black concrete walls with carved in relief.

Printed pattern on the glass pannels.

Architects used only three main colors inside: black, red and white. The combination of such strong colors, simple shapes, layers of floors and nice pattern on the windows created a very organic space inside. It is seemed like proportions of everything is slightly increased. The windows, the ceilings, some separate rooms- if we compare human size to them, they all are too large. But these facts made the space so special and interesting to experience.

Places for work located right next to huge windows in double-height space. The pattern on the glass protect people of over-sunlight.

Bright red details in the interior help visual devide the space

You can see, that some windows start on safe level to people, so when it is opened it is not dangerous.

Floors located on different levels, it would be difficult to understand which one is the actual second floor.

Utrech University is on the left side of the photo, small transition connects it with the library. You can see how different they are, but nevertheless look very organic together.
