British Design: from William Morris to the digital revolution

What was design at the same beginning? The present age is not merely an epoch of discovery; it is also a period of revision of the various elements of knowledge. Humans everyday life is full of objects which are an essential all part of our life. Cars chairs mobile phones, bicycles, buildings- for human beings of 21st century it is a "norm". The design stated its life in the middle of the 19th century in Great Britain. At that period the perception of design stated its metamorphosis to contemporary one. Society started perceive the mass production. The reaction on the technological progress was the new movement "the movement of art and craft".

One of the leaders of this movement was William Morris. His ideology was to save hand craft like it was in mid ages. But at the same time he never copied just decorative elements. The foundation of all his works was the symbiosis of architecture, craft and fine art. Probably, that is why the exhibition calls " British design from Williams Morris"

What impressed me more in this exhibition were modern lighting systems. "Engraving web" by Tom Dixon is neighboring with unusual scrtches by Christopher dresser. The whole structureof a lighting system is constructed with the same principeles which are reflected in dressers scetch book. thin carved parts are combined with each other and create something inspiring.
What I really like in this exposition is the way it is contracted. Two peaces from 19th and 20th cen. It gives a clear understanding of the topicality of a designer. It is like a dialogue of past and present, so that it is quite clear design changed. The participants from modern side use the most innovative and experimental materials and techniques.

But I was really upset that there was such a small territory as I want more. But at the same time I am extremely happy that in Moscow such exhibitions started to exist.
