Basilica Cistern: transformation from functionality to aesthetics

I decided to write about Basilica Cistern because I really think that it is one of the most incredible and mystical place that I have ever visited. Now, some unusual historical details.

The Basilica Cistern in Istanbul was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Empire by Greeks in 532. This is one of the largest and best preserved ancient underground reservoirs with the dimentions 145 × 65 m. Reserves of drinking water were stored in the Basilica in case of drought or siege of the city.
336 columns support the vaulted ceiling of the tank. Interesting fact that most of the columns were taken from ancient destroyed temples from the whole Byzantine Empire. That is why they all differ from each other by type of marble, treatment and consist of different elements. There are capitals in the Ionic, Corinthian and Doric style. Like at this picture.
I think, at that time aesthetic side of the columns for this structure didn’t play any role because all columns were taken indiscriminately from different parts of Empire only as stuctural parts for. There wasn’t any purpose for observation this building because all this was filled with water. That is why these columns served as main elements only for supporting the roof.
But what we can see now? This Cistern became one of most famous and charming sight of the town Istanbul. Nowadays its symmetry and sheer grandeur are quite breathtaking, and its cavernous depths make a great retreat on summer days. Walking along wooden platforms, you'll feel the water dripping from the vaulted ceiling and see ghostly carp patrolling the water – it is certainly has its unique and unforgettable atmosphere. Finally, it is clear that doday we perceive this space as something very beautiful and outstanding while ancient Greeks built it without any aesthetical ideas and only for functional goals.
This place also have more secrets which you can see if you visit this Cistern!

  1. Thank you for this post, Ksenia. Cistern is truly amazing. My favourite part in it's story is exactly the way it's built. When the functionality dominated over esthetics. On the other hand – how could they be so blind and put the heads downside up?! May be there were a logic and an intention in it we never know. Anyway the building is incredible due to its scale and sustainable design.
