I was not the only one, who attended the Open City exhibition in Shchusev Architecture museum, but I suppose, that this event is very important for architects, because it shows, in what directions Moscow is going to develop. Therefore I would like to write about some represented ideas, that I found the most interesting.
First of all Moscow seems to grow and there appear a question of planning the space. Contemporary Moscow is planned with the districts. This type of layout creates a landscape with complex road junctions, the streets of different size and significance are mixed with each other. Actually there is no strict planning. The streets are located in a quiet messy way. What is offered as a decision is to use a cross-road planning . As far as I am concerened, Saint Petersburg is built in this way. The main streets are crossed with the secondary ones. The hierarchy of the streets is clear and it is easy to move from one street to other. But is it possible for Moscow? If honest, I can not imagine, how it is possible to change the layout of Moscow without destroying its spirit. I would say, that the central part of the city should not be changed, while the outskirts, can possibly be constructed in crossed-road way.
The echibition illustrated lots of decisions, for making Moscow more comfortable for living. For example the Moscow river is going to be cleaned out to give the citizens opportunity to swim in it in summer. Embankments will be equipped with beaches.
The other interesting renovation is devoted to advertising. The new principle of design of the signages is that they should not obscure important elements of the facades and thould not argue with the image of the city.
The other change is devoted to illumination in the street. There considered, that on the on hand it is too much lights in the streets, but on the other had they do not provide enough light. There is a project of illumination of Sadovoe ring according to which only the top parts of the facades will be featured with light. I don't know if it helps to solve the problem, but the project have already been partly implemented.
As a conclusion I would like to say, that some of the represented decisions are doubtedly more effective the exhisting variants. Actually, no cardinal chandes will happen. Unfortunitely. nothing was said about traffic issue and the quality of the roads. I have mixed feelings about this exhibition. But at least I don't have illusions anymore.

ReplyDeleteThe fate of a city excites its inhabitants, so changes in the urban structure is very important to discuss publicly. The example of Moscow: new rules on registration of signs have already been developed in the studio Lebedev. In addition, a large project begins to change the embankments of the Moscow River.

This exhibition was useful for thinking, I visited it. There were lots of ideas for the Moscow future developing. Albina did a good work and found the most interesting ideas of other designers and architects. I really like an idea about advertising and signs. Of course, people need in some ads, but old beautiful buildings looks like clowns with these colourful stickers on them.
