I
attended the Master Classes of Riccardo Blumer under the visit of the tenth edition of the Saloni WorldWide Moscow. Riccardo
Blumer is an Italian designer who lives and works in Varese . His projects are combination of
simple forms and luxury materials. For a long time he specialized only in the
design of residential buildings, offices, industrial plants, interiors. Now he
combines such activities as architect, product designer, researcher and university
teacher at the Academy
of Architecture in Mendrisio- USI, at
the IUAV-RSM in S. Marino, at the NABA in Milan
and at the ISAID in Vicenza .
In 1997 he
received the “Design Preis Schweiz” award. In
1998 his won the “ADI
Compasso d’Oro” for his chair “LaLegera” (produced by Alias).
The lecture
was incredibly interesting and useful because the designer showed a lot of
slides with his experiment so audience could see real process of creation his
masterpieces. He
suggests that all non-essential elements in structure of the building or object
should be removed. Design for him is a result of research and experiments with
materials and techniques. He always tries to achieve balance between shape and
function in his products. He tests different materials before he
makes a decision about final appearance of his project. He uses not only
ordinary materials such as wood or metal but also food or grass.
I asked him about his preferences in materials
which he prefer as a product designer and as an architect. He told that he does
not have precedency to certain material but one of criteria which attract his
attention is its sound at fracture moment.
Riccardo Blumer tries to be in a
situation of learning something new or developing previously accumulated
knowledge. He does not afraid to work with ridiculous ideas but in which
implementation he believes.
I was
slightly disappointed about process of this lecture because the leader of the
event did not ask practical questions related to Riccardo’s professional knowledge or inspiration points, all her interest was
focused on lucre and customer requirements. Moreover the audience did not have
enough time to ask questions to Riccardo.

I also visited and enjoyed the lecture of this architect. Emotional, with passionate gestures, Riccardo Blumer, seem so obsessed with his work, that all pales before the opportunity for him to proceed to the next experiment or project. It can be called as a poet design. He's a little philosopher, definitely a dreamer, then believes that geometry - this is the main science that stands master designer. "Learn from nature" - he says, citing the example of one of his favorite experiments: eggshell weighs thirty grams, with under certain conditions it is capable of withstanding the weight of seventy pounds, so he created a 3.5 kg chair, which must withstand a hundred pounds.
